Cross Scramble into Activcity Semi

Activcity Quarter Final, Arboretum, 14th August

Murrayfield DAFS 119-7 (Sam Fergusson c30)
Holy Cross 119-6 (Owais Mazher c60, Charlie Ellis c30; Bharat Nussum 3 wkts)

Good game. HX scrambled a bye to the keeper off the last ball to tie the scores and win by losing one less wicket.

Cross squeaked through to the Activcity finals day (Sunday August 26th at Myreside/Craiglockhart) in an excellent game versus MDafs - adding to a long list of epic HX vs MDafs contests since THAT game in 2004.

A generally solid bowling performance with Andy K (plenty movement!) and Shannon's spells the pick and cje's the lowlight. Unusually we displayed some good fielding; especially from an unprecedentedly mobile cover field (Nawaz, Tom and Andrew R). We kept MDafs to 119: rather more than seemed likely at the 10 over mark - some good hitting from Fergusson helping their cause.

With a recently cut outfield and a decent pitch, 119 ought to have been more easily reached. But a slightly slow start put us behind the rate before some fine striking from Owais and steady play from cje seemed to have put HX in control.

But when cje and Owais were dismissed, the gloom descended further, the MDafs bowling tightened-up (Akerkar and Bharat) and we found ourselves struggling to pick up runs with any consistency (too many dot balls).

Some vital late boundaries from Jon and Shannon and energetic running from Tambo put things back in our favour before a late flurry of wickets made MDafs the favourites. With 2 balls remaining we needed 2 for the win and 1 for a tie but a swing and a miss meant that we had to rely on a scrambled bye to the keeper (would it have been a run if the keeper had hit? McGill said it would have required the 3rd umpire...).

Anyway, it all seems to suggest that Gary's long-distance running training has finally paid off..

This was exactly the scenario when we LOST the final last year. Indeed it will be Marchmont we play in the Semi-final (at Myreside).

HX Lookalikeys cont.

Once again no cricket means me stepping into the gap to (attempt to) entertain the fine defenders of Fortress Arboretum. Here's a peach I've been meaning to air for a while.

It must be said that despite his high end breeding, it appears that Lord Admin has a rather common fizzog although in this case the barnet is a great match too.

Not too long after his rag & bone impression, another of his doppelgangers has come to light.

Decide for yourself...

Lord Arboretum

Fans of BBC comedy The Thick of It will immediately know of whom I speak.

Good lord, it isn't is it???

The resemblance is uncanny (smile aside)!!!  Are they by any chance related??? We should be told!!!

Ziggy returns...

[match report by A. Cydzik]

Having resigned from skippering, banned from all websites n never discovered how to twitter....I'm back!!
The joys of a b.berry!!! :-) sorry!!!
Discovering on tuesday that the vice vice vice captain sometimes gets a shot (this is HX after all! - norrie playing pool, andy I'm a run machine quinn in the US, Smudger I'm cooler than groundsman willy Smith sipping sangria in barcelona) I decided to put the glass of wine and cigar down n tell the missus we were not going to the Loivre and that sunset over Paris was over rated! Arriving at arbo on saturday I was confronted with a text from andy q which looked nothing like the team picked that day earlier in the week in Paris - I can only assume that the wine n cigar were better than expected or remembered!
Thankfully the XI that took the pitch on saturday all stood up to the plate.
Oops, pizza has arrived....
Right, not sure I needed that, but was good, salami, peperoni, onion n sweetcorn, tasted good but the missus nicked two bits...what's all that about - get ur own! Hay ho, healthier than a kebab but not as tasty!
Right then, where was I, ah yes, the game.
The mighty HX team of 6 folk persuaded the skipper to go n toss. Thankfully skip looked at the site of those in the porta cabins n realised this wasn't a dodgy blue movie n went to the middle rather than elsewhere. Aving lost the toss we were stuck in. Thanfully the rest of the team decided to arrive - nawaz n usama being the last but living the closest!!! Brian n irfan getting us off to a good start of about 35 off the first 15 - not often we've not been 0 for a few this year. JB n ziggy then put on about 120. JB finishing on exactly 100no - lovely imperious knock as is so often. The rest swiped n smatterred, notably sandy, n took us to 222 for 7 by the end.
We took tea in good spirit then opened with amjid n usama. Good tight early overs were followed with some might swipes which meant they were 80 odd for 1 after 15. Gerry I'm too cool for school and Robin I'm too old to bowl worsnop then came on. Its wonderful being able to bowl the pair - the batsman must av been v confused in terms of the difference in pace between the two ends!!! Let's just say that by the end of their spells we were well on top with them 7 down and only on about 110 - Brian F taking 2 good catches behind the stumps. Abdul then came on and amjid too to finish his spell. Both kept it tight and amjid finally got reward. JB then came on and took a wicket with his first ball - it was meant to be!! We took the last wicket with a lovely run out when they took on nawaz's arm...mistake, game over, win by about 80, 3 out of 4 so far for the 2s - keep it going guys, all good so far this year :-)

Final over win for Keith's Codgers

Keith's Codgers
 199/ 3 (35 overs)

O. Mazher 50* (retired)
C. Ellis 52* (retired)
K. Fraser 38*
E. C. Smith 33

Raja: 8/1/33/1
G. Trewartha: 8/0/31/0
D. Russell: 6/0/58/0
J. Bates: 8/1/53/1
N. Webb: 5/0/19/0

Dougie's Dandies
191/ 8 (35 overs)
R. Javed 71
D. Russell 32
G. Trewartha 33

C. McGill 8/1/29/0
C. O. Smith: 8/0/44/2
C. Ellis: 8/0/47/5
E. Smith: 3/0/22/1
S. McCosker 8/0/35/0

Despite a wicket that looked decent but was a bit of a pudding and some
periods of cold weather, we managed a enjoyable inter-club match (I'll leave aside the abject standard of the tea bags bags we had to use: hopefully this will soon be rectified)  .
Everyone (bar Norrie) managed some valuable time in the middle and the bowlers got some overs under their belts. Good testing spells from Raja, GT & Simon, while Smudger and Coco did well to keep things tight against strong batting. Undoubtedly there was some friendly bowling on offer but some of the batting was impressive-Dougie getting some rough treatment from Owais and EC.
Raja got close to achieving the 25 needed of the last over...though cje may come under suspicion for his decision to bowl 'leg spin'.

Moment of the match:
EC's dismissal of GT with a surprise (genuinely) good ball. No footage exists but EC insists that the dismissal at 3.17 in this video is a virtual replica.

Special mention: 2 stumpings for Smudger! Plus a 40 mins spell on the roller in heavy rain!

Those wondering about the absence of CA Smith...he's currently 10 short of the 1000 mark! (990 at 17.68) -if only he'd turned some of those 2's into 3's....

KF....on the Twos

[By KF]

Morton (not the Greenock crew) arrived at ‘Fortress Arbo’ sitting proudly atop Division 5 with an unblemished record hoping to slay Nozzer’s New Model Army. With one squint eye looking over their shoulder at the relegation fight, HX, as is often the case, had a decent team on paper and worryingly, spirits were high. In what turned out to be a very even game for the duration, once the dust had settled, a top class innings from King Jon (129 no) proved decisive.

That’s not to say it was a one man show, I thought Andy G (9-3-18-0) and Usama (9-3-47-1) in particular looked handy with the ball, the fielding was thoroughly decent (despite IIRC, three difficult drops; me, Andy G, Usama), an ‘experienced’ 3rd wicket partnership of 91 kept us ahead of a ‘rain result’ before a super smooth Nawaz (30 no) helped JB see us through to maximum pointage.

Canny skipper Webb, who didn’t put a foot wrong all day, drew first blood losing a ‘great toss to lose’ and accepting the request to bowl first. The conditions were perfection for June in Caledonia, dull, muggy, drizzle almost hanging in the air, although the outfield was quicker than appearances suggested. Despite the recent rain, the wicket was in good shape, with some green for the bowlers and enough pace and bounce to keep both clubbers & chuckers happy.

Andy G & Usama opened the bowling against the positive Morton openers (Sehwag impersonator included). Any loose ball was severely punished, Usama particularly harshly dealt with, taking the visitors total along nicely at around 4 an over for the first 10 or so. Their taste for the aerial route was their initial downfall. First to fall was Karthik, pouched with aplomb on the long off boundary by Nawaz. Lancashire at 3 got busy, but with Sehwag (Sannah) sitting on his bat at the non-striker's end, he failed to heed the obvious warning from an aborted quick single the ball before and called again to Badback at midwicket. Hurling the throw directly over the stumps, albeit 8 feet above them, that man Norrie, in a whirl of fluoro pink, had the bails off with Lancashire still at the bus stop on Ferry Road.

Any time the Cross took a wicket, Morton replied in a positive fashion and the teams went head to head, toe to toe, neck and neck, blow by blow (ran out of those now). At one stage the visitors looked good for 260+, then we might have kept them to around 210 as Milly (9-0-53-2) nibbled on their tail and the final 229 was a fair and respectable total from 45 overs. Nathan (64) top scored for Morton. He looked good until around 55 when he injured himself and required a runner. Smudger (7-0-48-2) apparently with his radar signal a bit scrambled & Nawaz (2-0-12-1) were our other bowlers.

Tea was well received, Mandy doing her usual madnificent (sic) stint providing pizza and cans, although skipper Webb ensured his team stayed focussed and positive with rousing one-on-one’s all around the lounge.

Cool-headed PVB and a somewhat out of sorts Nipun began the Cross reply in the increasing gloom. Nipun (6) was triggered by Andy G (keep this one in mind for the Awards night) and just as the rain forced the teams off, PVB (16) was bowled. Not missing a trick, Webb jiggled the order during the rain break, promoting your lame scribe to 4. With heavy skies and a wet pitch and outfield, conditions weren’t ideal for batting. But they were worse for bowlers, enough bad balls slipping from the bowlers' grasp to help us along. While I baseballed one of my beamers for 6 (+1 nb, behind square, leg side, where else?), JB rather comically wore one (in his trademark sunny style) after trying at least twice to play a proper shot at it. It must be said that this was sandwiched between two typically dismissive 4’s. In an innings dripping with power, positivity and class, the highlight was probably a lofted Ferry Road bound maximum which dropped just short of the wall. Any width was clattered and anything full got blootered.

Amusingly, after another beamer was dispatched for 4, Smudger at square leg called no ball, and PVB, oblivious, proclaimed ‘over’ and set off to square leg at the other end. Fortunately it didn’t matter in the end. My share of our 91 partnership was an almost whimpering 27. The consolation being I had the best seat in the ground.

With 3 down, we still required 78 from 72 balls, but Nawaz was able to continue the supporting role I’d assumed for the middle of the innings adding a few really lovely shots of his own. Long before the end, as the gloom dissipated and the sun began, almost surreally, to beat down, the league leaders became resigned to their fate, the wickets we still had in hand stacking the odds in our favour and no end in sight to Psycho’s brutality. Their last hope faded late on when the centurion was dropped, HX strolling home with 13 balls to spare.

An excellent result against a very decent side. I thought their positive attitude while batting was impressive and they’ll surely do well in Div 5 this season. Through green & gold specs, an excellent team performance with what will surely be a season’s best knock by an in-form Jonny (look, I wasn’t going to mention, but he bowled quite well too (9-0-42-1), I thought he got enough of a mention with the bat). All that’s left to say is…

Crosstastic, Crossalicious and Crossmungous!!!

brief report from the Morton perspective here.

Cross beat the rain...and their opponents as Psycho goes on the rampage!

Div 1 (Grange Loan)

Holy Cross 1st XI 144ao (S. Bonfield 45, C. Ellis 38; H. Aslam 4-26)
Carlton 2s 121 (N. Pietsch 48, Majumder 30).
Worsnop 7-1-20-2
Bonfield 8-1-20-1
Lynch 10-3-22-2
Russell 10-1-18-1
Ellis 6-0-21-2
Bainbridge 6.2-1-15-0

On a tricky wicket we were soon 16-3 as Owais (after starting nicely) played across an straight one and the two Smiths were undone by extra bounce from Mackay. Bonfield and Ellis put together a solid partnership of 62 before (just as he found some fluency against the Carlton spinners) Ellis tried to cut one too close to him. The lower middle order failed to build on this decent platform, with only Dougie (a v nice 18) and Lynch (10) getting past 1. When Bonfield fell for a very handy 45 the innings rather subsided with several ill-advised lofted strokes against Aslam's well-flighted leggies; we were all out in the 44th over about 30 short of a good score.

Carlton also started badly in the face of testing opening bursts from Bonfield & Worsnop. Shannon getting McPherson ct behind for 0 for the 2nd time in 13 days (6 balls in total) and Robin getting Barrett (who was unable to take advantage of a horror drop by Pat in Shannon's 1st over) and then Hunt. But Carlton had depth in batting and Majumder and Duerden played some fine shots as a few looser deliveries were sent down. They put on 48 before Pat had Duerden lbw and this sparked a collapse: from 57-3 to 66-7. Pat was in the middle of a hostile spell: the highlight the bouncer that Well's gloved behind. However our momentum was somewhat checked by the frequent interruptions for rain-thankfully none of the showers lasted too long and the covers kept the pitch and footholds in a playable condition.

Dougie also bowled very nicely, including a fine c & b off Majumber who had seemingly targeted him. However Pietsch (who had scored a good 60-odd in similar conditions/ circumstances at Arbo recently) remained. Bimbo bowled a good late spell to ensure that the required run rate remained high-a late maiden by Shannon also helped in this regard. Only Aslam offered him much support, but once they were 9 down Pietsch found another gear and he put on 24 with Mackay (1*) before a mix up left Pietsch scrambling in the mud just short of his ground (the equation at this point was 24 req of 4). Hardly a perfect performance (as well as a disappointing batting performance, there were 2 v bad drops that might have cost us badly on another day) but a good game to win versus able opponents.

Div 5 (Arboretum)
Morton 229-8 (Nathan 64) lost to Holy Cross 2nds 230-3 (J Bates 129*)

Bimbo blast seals victory for BFLs, while 2s and 3 compete but lose.

Saturday Results Digest.

1sts

Edinburgh 2 80ao (Obeid 40, Bainbridge 5/27, P. Kumar 3/14) lost to Holy Cross 81-1 (S. Pickering 31*, N. Metha 21).

Getting Mazhar (700+ runs this season) for 0 was key (top delivery from Bimbo: top catch from Spick). After that, good spells from Bimbo and Praveen pressurised an understrength Edinburgh batting line-up into some 'ambitious' shots. A useful partnership (assisted by a few fielding lapses) between nos 9 & 10 showed that the pitch was perfectly playable before Milly ended it with one of his signature submarine balls. New boy Pat ended the innings with his third ball - a useful delivery that hit the top of off.

Runs efficiently knocked off (against some decent bowling, with the pitch doing some odd things) by Nipun, Spickers and cje.

Surprisingly early finish meant we could enjoy the Bates and Bailey show at Arbo and the BBQ (cheers to Bainbro, Mandy and Michael for their organisational efforts).

2nds

Carlton 3s 262 for 7 (C Paterson 126, Z Yusaf 42*) beat Holy Cross 2s 196 for 7 (P Bailey 64, J Bates 56, F Allardice 2 for 18, R Metcalfe 2 for 26)

Heavily delayed match report 1st vs Watsonians 2s

Holy Cross travelled to Craiglockhart on Saturday to take on league leaders Watsonians who had been unbeaten since the opening game of season. Actually this isn't strictly true as some of our number travelled to Myreside although knew they were in the wrong place when two teams were seen warming up.

Seeing as how it's now Wednesday I can't remember if Watsons chose to bat or were put in. Either way they batted first on a wicket that looked like it had the potential to be interesting. In he absence of our regular opening bowlers Andy Killey and your author got the game underway. Killey looked particularly dangerous on the Craiglockhart deck, beating the bat on several occasions and was eventually rewarded with the wicket of Flannigan, one of several Sonians batsmen to have been a thorn in Cross sides in the past.

Fox was next to fall to a superb catch from Andy Quinn and, with both bowlers keeping things tight, after 20 overs Watsons were 64 - 2. However after witnessing Crosbie the No4 deposit the ball out of Arbo on several occasions in the return fixture Cross knew there was still plenty do despite the good start. A change of bowling brought Doctor Astley to the fore and in line with my early morning premonition he was the man to remove the dangerous Crosbie. Around the same time Saisubramanian was beginning to look dangerous hitting a succession of boundaries. Buoyed by compliments from the previous weekend's touring party's key batsman Damo, the skipper thought he was due a bowl and how right he proved to be, removing Saisubramanian with his first ball to another good catch from KF.

From here on Watsons wickets fell regularly with Charlie amazingly picking up his first senior 5 for (amazing that it was his first not that he did it). Watsonians ended all out in the 46th over (I think) for 174.

With the pitch becoming more unpredictable it was a total we should have chased down but by no means for certain. When Charlie fell for 2 Sonians' mood changed; however 23 from Spickers and 28 from EC around another good knock of 46 KF (thankfully the selectors are still ignoring his form) got us close. When Calum fell for 9 a few nerves might have began to flutter in Cross stomachs.

No need however, with Dougie and Psycho at the wicket the remaining runs were swiftly knocked off. Bates was in a particularly savage mood hitting a quickfire 25* to close out a good victory. With both sides missing players this was a good win for HX with every single player contributing and an excellent effort in the field. It was particularly pleasing to see how the fielding had improved from the game against Accies where it was the difference between the sides.

Breaking News....1sts beat leaders but 2nds and 3rds lose

Saturday Scores Digest:
1sts
Chased down Watsonians' 174 all out for the loss of 5 wickets on a very tricky wicket. KF led the way with 46; useful contributions from Spickers, EC, CA, Dougie and Psycho - and extras. In the first half Killer and Bimbo led off with disciplined opening spells, and the Doctor got rid of key man Crosby - cje was able mop things up with his 1st EVER 5-for, including their skip Breach who made a battling 83.

But ultimately it was all down to the skipper's inspired bowling change.... obviously...ask him about it....at least KF didn't start laughing till he took the catch.

Watsonians 2 174ao (D. Breach 85, V. Saisubramanian 19, C. Ellis 5/20)
Holy Cross 176-5 (K. Fraser 46, E. Smith 28, J. Bates 25*, S. Pickering 23).
