The Silence Of The Lambs

The Bish
Largo visited Arboretum on Saturday scrapping for their first division lives. However the hosts continued to show the form that has driven them onwards and upwards this season and showed no mercy to the promising, but ultimately too inexperienced visitors.

The Cross batted first on a bogeyish track (soft, green & a bit runny) that required application from the batsmen. Well, ordinary batsmen. Rintoul, opening the bowling from the North Pole end, chided Owais for not being able to reach a wide in a surreal attempt to draw the batsmen into a war of words. Mazher’s response was to let his back take the flak and his bat do the chat. Owais appears to play the game on a strip of his own blasting his way to 22 from 17 balls before mistiming one of his booming off-drives to mid off. A little appetiser before the main course on Sunday as it turned out.

Future Hall-of-Famer, Ellis Jr joined the entrenched KF, who continued in a sort of supporting role before being emptied by “probably the ball of the decade” (my words) in the 23rd over with the score on 79 for an unattractive 20 from 64 balls. This brought the skipper into the middle.

CJE, already in his stride and ECS building steadily began to put a really solid platform in place. Whilst the young Largo bowlers lacked any real bite (plenty bark), Frohlich apart, they showed good control and excellent variation to keep our 3 & 4 honest. Over time, our patience was rewarded. 200 would’ve been nice, 220 probably more than enough and anything else a bonus.

As the Largo kids began to wilt, the skipper in particular punished any loose balls. Charles was next to fall as we moved up through the gears for 85. Shannon added 17 in no time, refusing to face a dot ball for most of it, giving Spickers three deliveries at the end to make 2 not out. The skipper meanwhile stayed right to the end, succumbing only to a suicidal run out off the last ball. His knock of 78 included 4 (four, yes FOUR) maximum’s, three of which received heckles from the non-striker that he only had one shot. The 4th six dispelled such notions disappearing back over the bowlers head.

The innings came to rest at 238-5. This after passing 100 in the 32nd over illustrates how well we built on a solid start. I was impressed with the crop of Largo youngsters who all bowled and fielded well.  I’m going to mention Ryan Brown (7-1-31-0) in particular, but that’s a little unfair on the rest. They’ll be a much tastier adversary in 3 or 4 years time as, I’m led to believe, they have plenty more youngsters throughout their 4 XI’s.

After another fine Tea by Eminem, Smith opted to open with Bimboridge at the South Pole End. He struck with his third ball getting Speering to ‘do a Ziggy’, raising arms to a jab-backer that clipped the off peg. If not a fatal blow to the reply, it sprang a proverbial leak at the waterline.

The other opener was soon removed by The Bimbo (10-1-30-4) before, in one fine spell, a trail of destruction was scorched through the Fifers middle order by our own Fifer, Gary T (10-2-23-4).

Bonfield (9-1-22-0) used his two spells to write another thrilling chapter in his 1,001 Ways To Avoid Taking A Wicket. It fell to third change chucker, auxiliary Bishop Lynch (5.3-0-11-2) to bounce out the last two little lambs, both pouched behind by the ever reliable voice mail interceptor, Si Hackering.

Dougie (3-0-12-0) was the only other chucker on the day. 100 all out and more points in the bank as we look for our best league finish in over a decade.

Last Over Win Over Widows for McGill's Midweek Men

Scottish Widows 120ao (19.1 overs)
Edwards 39
U. Shazad 1/ 22 (4 overs)
V. Gaware 1/29 (4 overs)
Bainbridge 2/10 (2 overs)
C. O. Smith 2/21 (4 overs)
C. McGill 2/18 (3.1)
N. Shazad 0/11 (2 overs)

Holy Cross 121/1 (19.1 overs)
C. Ellis 72*
A. Quinn 30*
N. Metha 11.

With warm sunshine and a firm wicket ...it almost felt like May again..

Highlights included a near hatrick from Bainbro (hatrick ball missed off stump by an inch), a promising spell from Usama and 3 catches from Nawaz-one of them a candidate for catch of the season (from a well hit pull off from Smudger's 'slow bouncer' ). Otherwise fielding a little mixed - especially from some of the 1st teamers present - though Michael did a good stint sweeping at deep cover.

Good entertaining game that left us needing six to win off the last over-luckily the first one was a full-bunger.

Drummond Trinity 2nds 138-9
Holy Cross 3rds 139-8

very exciting match won with 1 ball to spare: with Popey hitting
the winning runs via a glorious...er...gloved nurdle to short third man.
From the few overs I saw, some good batting and running by Usama and
Ellis Snr, with the latter doing his best 'Dean Jones in the 2nd tied test' impression.
Good to see the thirds up at Arbo-though a bit dissapointing that none of their opposition
made it.

Youthful Cross Prevail

Despite the rather muddy pitch we had an enjoyable friendly vs the Muffers in a a match in which an attempt was made to break the record for the 'most people playing whilst smoking' (I counted five; though Coco -as usual-smoked enough for 11 normal men).

The Cross fielded an unusually youthful and athletic side - with a few Cross veterans (McGill, Lawrie, Bates, Ellis) making up the numbers.
Skipper McGill prevailing against Don Wilkie in the battle of the cantankerous er.. captains.

A fluent start from the inform pair of Nipun Metha and C. J. Ellis (both retired on 30) followed by other useful contributions from 'Psycho' Bates (as he is known to Muffers), Vikram and Nawaz took us to 144.

Good bowling performance with good spells from Vikram, Burgess, McGill (adding to his long list of international victims), Bates, Nipun, and particularly Nawaz kept Mufs to just over a hundred -despite some fine striking from one of their openers (Anand Venkatesh). (Though he almost fell to an attempt for catch of the millennium from Andy G/J Pope-they attempted something along the lines of: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWO5MO8z4ks )

Some good keeping from Ken -including a nice stumping (!!).

BTW can the person who borrowed my bat at the weekend and put a rather large crack right through the middle of it....

1sts Pip Mufs in Arbo Thriller

At a hot and sunny Arboretum.

Murrayfield/DAFS 227-4 (50 overs)
M Agerkar 57, R Black 52*, J Crus Rocha 49*, P Hubbard 43

Holy Cross 228-6 (49 overs)
C Ellis 87, D Russell 54*, C Smith 47
R Devangere 3-19 (a top class spell on a pitch generally favouring the batsmen despite Friday's heavy rain)

Super game of cricket that fluctuated throughout. The final stages played out in a cracking atmosphere with Mufs 2/3/4's players and our 2nds/3rds (plus our regular supporters; AR, HK and JLRB etc as well as Dougie's family) creating a sizeable, good-natured crowd.

An adequate performance in the field (crucially, as against Helensburgh we kept things quiet in the final few overs - despite Mufs having set batsmen in and wickets in hand).

After we seemed well set at 105-1 at the halfway point, things looking dicey for us with just 4 overs left and 34 required but some fine shots (from Dougie in particular; 54 off 61 balls) got us home, 17 runs coming off the key 47th over. Shot of the day may have been Bainbro's 1st ball; a class cover driven 4 off Mel, though the turning point may have been Simon's 4 just over the head of long off.

2nds and 3rds lost despite runs for Jon (2nds) and Nipun and Scott (3rds).

Better stop there as I've just returned from Bainbro's excellent Barbeque (we can surely now use the word now that it has taken place) and am somewhat less than sober.

1sts edge cracking match at Largo... 2nds lose... 3rds win

Holy Cross 255-5
C. Ellis 106, D. Russell 40*

Largo 242ao in 49.4 overs.
B. Stinson 104, C. Walker 70, G. Robinson 42
D. Russell 3-60

Superb game of cricket played in excellent spirits. We made 255 but we perhaps could have made 25 or so more. After a slow start (38 off 15) against super spells from Robin and Shannon, Walker and Stinson put on 166 to get Largo very much in the game as they were till the end. Indeed at one stage it looked like we might lose by 10 wickets having made 255! Stinson in particular with some superb striking including two huge sixes, as well as one carried over the boundary by Roland (was a good catch though!).

Praveen with the key wickets of Stinson (off stump sent cartwheeling) and Walker changed things and we held our nerve in the field to secure our 5th win of the season-all of which have been in tight matches. Div 1 is currently an excellent league to play in with all matches competitive.

Brief mention in the Evening News digest:
http://sport.scotsman.com/cricket/Cricket-Swan-helps-Carlton-II.5387729.jp

The 2nds lost by 20 odd to Falkland 3s (despite lower order heroics from Smudger and Shammo) while the 3rds beat Preston Village 2nds with Ellis Snr in the wickets.

Details to follow from the respective skippers.

Cross Make Progress in Cricket Scotland Trophy

This post was originally published under the title "Cross Make Progress in Cricket Scotland Trophy ?" Since then Cricket Scotland have confirmed us as the "winners". Hard on Dundee HSFP. We hope to meet them again on a sunnier day. (Admin)

The scorecard of the match and the SCU trophy Draw/ results can be viewed here: http://www.cricketscotland.com/node/6244

Heavy rain brought our match vs Dundee High FPs at Arbo to a premature conclusion.

The competition rules would suggest that we were ahead of the run rate at the time but....
we'll leave it to Cricket Scotland to sort out...

Holy Cross 238-5
C. Ellis 118, E. Smith 81
E. Parsons 2-25
J. Landwehr 2-23

I believe that the partnership of 193 between Smith and Ellis may well constitute a new 1st team record-beating the previous best of 174 (though that remains the league record) achieved in 1978 (PVB and HK, can you double check...). It's certainly the most these two batsman have put on together: beating the 146 they put on in the same competition at Forfar last year and the 132 they put on at Goldenacre in 2005.

Dundee HSFP 54-2 off 13 overs
K. Kyles 35*
S. Bonfield 2-19

A Cup Win at Last...

At Dreselrigg, Livingston.
Cow Corner 20: 20-1st round

Holy Cross 136/ 4
C. Ellis 72*, K. Fraser 21, E. C. Smith 20.
A. Wilcox 2-23
M. Collins 2-33

Livingston 98/5
J. Wilson 25, N. Jukes 22
D. Russell 2/7.

On a slow and slightly awkward surface, HX did well to make 136 with KF scoring a brisk 21 and 20: 20 specialist (...) Ellis carrying his bat. Some good late tonking from captain Smith (with the 4th different bat in 4 innings...) took us well above a par score.

Some good tight spells from Bonfield, Bainbridge, Ellis, Russell and McGill (whose wicket was via a fine boundary catch from EC) squeezed the life out of the Livi reply and we could afford to experiment in the final overs - though the Livi batsmen were disappointed that EC didn't have an over or two. The win secures a Quarter Final tie (at home) to Fauldhouse.

Thanks to Scott Russell and Nipun for agreeing to play at the last moment.

Sixty Point Saturday

For the first weekend in some time all three teams won their matches.
The 2nds' victory the most unlikely-by 1 wicket following a final wicket partnership of 40-odd between Gerry and Zeeshan (details to follow from Ziggy or James P...). Highlights of the 3rd team win included 70 from Mike Nevin and 6 wickets for McGill.

Some brief details of the 1st team game:

At Arboretum:

Holy Cross 226-4
E. Smith 68*, K. Fraser 41, C. Ellis 40.

Heriots 2 192 ao
T. Weereratna 61
T. Harwick 36
A Butt 27

D. Russell 3-21
R. Worsnop 3-28
C. O. Smith 2-44

Lovely weather, decent pitch and a close game of cricket which appeared to be heading Heriots' way after Tino's partnerships with Butt (out unluckily) and Harwick had taken them from 80-4 to 170 odd for 5. Fortunately, we finally held on to a few catches towards the end. Earlier Euan continued his good form while all the other batsmen made useful contributions.

Both sides a bit light on bowling resources, though Heriots were able to encourage Asim Butt to play his first game for a while: his 10 overs, 1/15 showed his class-and his ability to swing the ball a long way. We struggled a bit in the field against some aggressive middle-order batting but it's encouraging that we've found a way to win 3 tight games so far. 3 wins out of 4 equals our start in Div 1 in 1998 -and is our best start (in Div 1 in its various forms) since at least 1990 (pvb-any better starts from the 80s?-unlikely given the strength of ESCA Div 1 in that decade).

Heriots' view of proceedings here:
http://www.heriotscricket.com/id10.html

Saturday's results leave Div 1 (roughly) like this:

F'House 100
HCross 85
B'Muir 78.8
Glens 73.8
Accies 71
Wats 66.67
MDafs 64
Largo 55
Carlton 45
Heriots 31.67

2nd warm-up win for 1sts

At Bailliefields, Westquarter (25th, April).

Holy Cross 180/6 off 40 overs.

C. Ellis 93*, E. C. Smith 22, K. Fraser 20, D. Russell 14.

Westquarter 54ao off 22.5 overs.

S Farooqi 16,
S. Bonfield, 6 overs, 1-13
R. Bainbridge, 5 overs, 1-10
I. Astley, 3 overs, 3-6
N. Amjid, 4 overs, 3-6
A. Millington, 3 overs, 2-14

full scorecard here:

The 1st XI followed their workmanlike victory against Edinburgh University with a more convincing display against Div 2 side Westquarter; against whom we’d rather underperformed in previous contests. In contrast to most pre-season matches, the sun shone and we fielded a near first-choice XI. Dougie Russell, looking fit, made his comeback and was soon striking his trademark straight drives.

The pitch was an interesting prospect: firm but rather pitted: resulting in ankle high and head high balls from deliveries pitched in the same ‘areas’. Fortunately, the Westquarter bowlers failed to keep a consistent line and gave us plenty scoring opportunities-even if the rather thick outfield slowed the scoring rate. We made an over-par 180-6 with Ellis, employing -as encouraged by the club President - some agricultural [or should that be horticultural?] strokes, making 93*. With Fraser, E.C. Smith and Dougie making useful runs, all of the top 7 have had some ‘middle time’ over the two pre-season games; apart from C. A. Smith, run out by Ellis.

Shannon’s opening spell rather put the wind up the opposition; getting their leading bat (Mumtaz) 2nd ball -via a sharp slip catch by Fraser - certainly made the task easier. The other bowlers backed-up Shannon’s effort well: Nadeem taking his first wickets for the Cross, Astley causing problems with virtually every ball. Millington (in his first game for a while) and Bainbridge also bowled solid spells. Some good catching by Fraser, Bonfield, E. C (with an edge between keeper and 1st slip the only major blemish) and some over-ambitious shots helped us knock Westquarter over for 50.

Thanks to WRCC for hosting the match and the excellent tea.

An encouraging start but things will be far more testing next weekend when the 1st XI face Murrayfield-Dafs on Saturday (Roseburn) and, in the Presidents Trophy Final on Sunday , Watsonians (at Kirkhill, Penicuik).
