Sixty Point Saturday

For the first weekend in some time all three teams won their matches.
The 2nds' victory the most unlikely-by 1 wicket following a final wicket partnership of 40-odd between Gerry and Zeeshan (details to follow from Ziggy or James P...). Highlights of the 3rd team win included 70 from Mike Nevin and 6 wickets for McGill.

Some brief details of the 1st team game:

At Arboretum:

Holy Cross 226-4
E. Smith 68*, K. Fraser 41, C. Ellis 40.

Heriots 2 192 ao
T. Weereratna 61
T. Harwick 36
A Butt 27

D. Russell 3-21
R. Worsnop 3-28
C. O. Smith 2-44

Lovely weather, decent pitch and a close game of cricket which appeared to be heading Heriots' way after Tino's partnerships with Butt (out unluckily) and Harwick had taken them from 80-4 to 170 odd for 5. Fortunately, we finally held on to a few catches towards the end. Earlier Euan continued his good form while all the other batsmen made useful contributions.

Both sides a bit light on bowling resources, though Heriots were able to encourage Asim Butt to play his first game for a while: his 10 overs, 1/15 showed his class-and his ability to swing the ball a long way. We struggled a bit in the field against some aggressive middle-order batting but it's encouraging that we've found a way to win 3 tight games so far. 3 wins out of 4 equals our start in Div 1 in 1998 -and is our best start (in Div 1 in its various forms) since at least 1990 (pvb-any better starts from the 80s?-unlikely given the strength of ESCA Div 1 in that decade).

Saturday's results leave Div 1 (roughly) like this:

F'House 100
HCross 85
B'Muir 78.8
Glens 73.8
Accies 71
Wats 66.67
MDafs 64
Largo 55
Carlton 45
Heriots 31.67

  1. And let's have a few more of these weekends because I'll tell you what...I've noticed that winning feels a great deal better than losing. Call me old fashioned if you like.

While we are on the the subject of 'old fashioned'...what do we all think of there being an Exchange and Mart on our website?

    I'll start the ball rolling.

    1. Anyone ditching/selling a reasonable pair of batting gloves?

    2. Anyone want a heavyish bat (brand new) in exchange for a light bat? Be warned, the heavy bat either needs considerable time to be beaten in or it is not as big a pinger as it looks.

On the basis that probably everyone will think the heavyish bat is dead as a duck...does anyone want to sell/get rid of a light but half way decent cricket bat?

    There we go then.....

  2. The 2's......

Lost the toss and out in the field on probably the best weather i have seen in Edinburgh! We were put under the cosh by Heriots captain, Suttie, who reached a comfortable 50 with (mostly) horrible hoicks in the opinion of some of the bowlers (well me). However, a full toss (how often is it a full toss) from Amjid saw Suttie caught dead on 50 and with the next 2 wickets bowled (inc a broken bail) saw Amjid's first hat-trick for the Cross (and his 3rd in his career (maybe, he ain't Coco!)) The 3 wickets changed the game and Heriots collapsed from 80odd-1 to 146all out. Amjid with 4 and Gerry and Zeesham with 2 the bowling picks.

Praise to a younger Heriots lad, who batted for 15odd not out, as everyone else around him dissappeared, he showed some lovely technique and patience, and with some support would have caused us problems.

Then the batting, 146 was very very gettable (the wicket and outfield probably worth 170odd). However, Brian (honestly walking for a caught behind, when i as umpire and many fielders were not sure at all), PVB, Simon, Ziggy, Shifty and Andy Q back in the hutch with the score on 51, we were really really in danger of an embaressing defeat. Amjid and Andy G set about wrestling us some pride and getting us into the game with a 40 odd partnership (for those that saw Andy last week, think that style), but a mini collapse of Andy, Me (1) and Amjid saw us 99ish-9 with 15 overs to go.

Step in Gerry and Zeesham, who played sensibly and with no small amount of guts to get us to an at times unlikely win. Talk at the sides went from 'Next Batting Point' to 's*** we can win this' as the pair played beautifully, with the minimal risk to win with 5 overs to spare.

A much needed win for the 2's, not just because of the opposition, but because targets have just been missed in recent weeks and we really needed to make one.

    My 2 Pence
This win is not flash in the pan. I have never felt so flat after a win, because i have so much more to give to a game than i did, i imagine that bar Gerry, Amjid and Zeeshan a number of other players would feel the same. If we can win games when we don't play well, we should and we will win games when we all do.

I was very pleased for Ziggy, who gives so much for the 2's, looking out for everyone whether they play well or not, compared to his Heriots opposite number at times yesterday. I expect Ziggy crawled home from the Arbo last night!!!!
