very exciting match won with 1 ball to spare: with Popey hitting
the winning runs via a glorious...er...gloved nurdle to short third man.
From the few overs I saw, some good batting and running by Usama and
Ellis Snr, with the latter doing his best 'Dean Jones in the 2nd tied test' impression.
Good to see the thirds up at Arbo-though a bit dissapointing that none of their opposition
made it.

What did the 3rd XI think of playing at Inverleith park on the artificial - both the quality of the pitch and the convenience of the location.
ReplyDeleteA few years ago the consensus was to stick with Campbell Park.
I'm sure Popey the batsman will have a view.
Fairly poor quality - the 'carpet' was coming away from the sides.
ReplyDeleteLocation - great. Good to nip up to Arbo for Tea and could have good potential for post-match banter and generate a lively club spirit.
'Popey the batsman' more, 'Popey the man with steel nerves' felt that as an artifical it played well, when you consider some artificals like SMRH where there is tennis ball bounce or others were there are huge lumps in it (Musselburgh 2's ground). Most balls bowled (or watched as an Umpire) behaved themseles with true bounce (a couple stayed a tad low, but none that were straight, more full outside off stump) if you wanted bounce, well you couold get it if you bent your back and hit just back of a length. Likewise the pace was fairly good also.
ReplyDeleteHowever, the top surface was coming away at the sides, and under your front foot as a bowler bounding in. Additionally, i find as a bowler, i have a lack of confidence with my landing on astro, i much prefer knowing my spikes will stick, but you can;t win them all.
If we had been on a sticky wicket at Campbell Park yesterday it would not have been as good a match.
As for my winning run, the guy bowled a very good short ball, aiming high at my chest, i was determined to get something on it, bat, body, head, and get the run, smacked my gloves and bat, went down and we ran a good single, with top backling up from Nigel (some members of the club could learn from that idea!!!!)
A very enjoyable game, friendly opposition, questionable judgement from them on the wide rule in my opinion (i certainly didn't think teh 3 against me were wides). But the game was played in a great spirit.
I was fantastic to be part of a club again however I did find the playing surface to be loose, many dead areas on the off side and as mentioned previously the carpet was loose at either side.
ReplyDeleteKeeping to Andy was very difficult difficult due to the dead areas. Sorry :(
Its also aggrivated my shin splint in my left leg, but i think thats just it being an artifical in general
ReplyDeleteJames - you mean your shin is artificial? Wow, the mystery of a man that you are just intensifies.....
ReplyDeleteThe Coastal take -it was one of the worst I've played on - the middle of the track was OK but the edges and bowlers landing areas are awful! There are dead areas, floating patches and ripples on the edges, it's a bit too sunken and the resultant ridge all round makes it very difficult to keep on, possibly dangerous coz of the variable bounce and the ridge, almost impossible to get a good keeping length, I turned my ankle twice whilst running (batting) I reckon it'd be lethal if wet! The outfield is poor even by Roseburn standards. It needs lifted and properly relaid to even out the whole surface and sort the ridges, ripples, dead areas and floating patches.(the repair seems poor, we picked up several rusty nails left lying near the wicket and Popey had to keep putting one of the new ones back) All in all I'd prefer not to play on it again unless it is properly sorted and something is done about the outfield too, mnid you I don't really like playing on an artificial. Otherwise it's great to be near Arbo, If we could use/share the main pitch I'd jump at the chance, but not this artificial only!
