We won both of our games on Friday night and accumulated just enough bonus points to edge out Edinburgh South meaning we have qualified for the semi final on Friday 29th March (Easter Friday). Some more details can be found on the ESCA website.
Our team was
J McOscar
K Fraser
S McOscar (c)
S Bonfield
R Bainbridge
R Worsnop
Winning the toss in the first game and asking Edinburgh South to bat allowed us to set the tone for the evening by keeping it tight and picking up wickets with regularity. With a low target, we were able to pass their total without any scoreboard pressure for the loss of one wicket.
In the second game we bowled first, again our bowlers produced some gems keeping the pressure on Tranent and keeping their total down. Once more we were able to bat within ourselves. One short of their total Jimmy reached 25 and retired and we went past their score without losing any wickets.
Qualification would be calculated taking run rate into account. However in both games the skipper decided to ensure the win first and foremost and let the rest take care of itself. And maybe a little bit because none of us really knew the rules. As it turned out, this worked perfectly.
C'mon the Cross!!!

Stuttering Cross through to Indoor Finals night
Score from Wednesday's re-scheduled LiveSport ESCA Indoor 6s matches:
Boroughmuir 115-2 : Tranent 55
HX (GT, CJE, Simon, Dougie, PVB, Pat) 95-3; Boroughmuir 59 all out
HX (GT, Simon, CJE, Dougie, KF, Pat) 61 all out : Tranent 50 all out
[further details from PVB to follow]

Perhaps not helped by KF's slight lateness...well he only missed one game... HX struggled in both matches. At the 15 over stage (matches are 10 overs per side) we were 2nd favourites in both matches but held our nerve better than our opponents.
Undoubtedly we also had a few moments of fortune, including two very near sixes that would have seen Tranent beat us, and a few '50: 50' decisions..
Cheers to PVB for stepping in...who was then kippered by Dougie...
Simon's Ist match for HX didn't start too promisingly...1st baller (was a decent shot-just picked out sq leg) but pulled it round: looking good in his 2nd knock, some good keeping, key wickets and a fine catch to clinch the game vs Tranent. Key to that victory-in all due fairness to KF -were three sharp catches behind the stumps.
After having a rather easy 1st evening, it was perhaps good preparation for Friday that we had such tough games. Tranent seem to have picked up some talented young players-watch out for them this season.

Cross Nets
![]() |
Holy Cross!!! |
And with that subtle prompt, I would like to remind everyone that tomorrow is the final pre-season indoor net session.
Usual time, usual place.
At such an esteemed club as ourselves, every opportunity must be grabbed to attend nets as you never know when the next one might be. And although numbers have been almost acceptable so far, let's forego the temptations of Chelsea v Spurs (Sky Plus it) or shopping with the wife (tell where to stick it) and engage in some of the rusty hacking and blended frogging that passes for our practice.
Oh aye, one last thing, if anyone see's a Smith, let them know about nets too...

Indoor 6's - Breaking News
![]() |
Six of the Best |
Full details shall be posted on ESCA website in due course and relayed to this very place.
Fans of Cross cricket will surely be ecstatic to learn that all the action was captured and shall be posted in due course for future perusal. For the time being, surely no need to tinker with the SuperSonicSix that coldly and clinically dealt with the opposition. Even McGill would struggle to get in this side (is he being saved for the final, or is he unable to play inside due to smoking laws?)!!!
Scores went something like this:
HX v Boroughmuir (HX won toss, bowled first)
Boroughmuir 45 all out
Holy Cross 46-0 (8th over, Ellis/Millington)
HX v Tranent (Tranent won toss, bowled first)
Holy Cross 129 all out (10th over)
Tranent 55 all out (this is an approximate total, S Russell not out)
Rules:
Bowlings - 10 overs per side, 5 bowlers, 2 overs each. Leg side - wide, miss the mat - no ball/wide. Can catch batter out if ball bounces off the side wall on the full or roof.
Battings - Hit side wall - 1 run, hit wall behind bowler on the bounce - 4 runs, hit wall behind bowler on the full - 6 runs. Hit roof - 1 run. Take a run - 2 runs.
Report - In the three team group, Boroughmuir & Tranent faced off first allowing the Cross boys to get an idea of tactics. A plethora of run outs, as the games hall was reasonably tight, forged the idea not to take silly runs. This later resulted in no runs being taken by Ellis & Millington until the 7th over of our doughtily accomplished chase.
But first, despite a few lusty blows, Boroughmuir were unable to stay at the crease long enough. Gaware produced ball of the night with a full inswinger to empty one poor 'Muir man. Trewartha (loosish) & Russell (tight) kept it tightish enough before back to back Millington overs ended the Boroughmuir innings in the 6th over.
Ellis & Millington then built a solid base, giving nothing away and reaching the late 20's after 6 overs. The 7th over excellently brought the scores level and Milly (I think) hit the winning 1.
Straight back on we were put in by Tranent. Probably no need to remind folks that this pitted Russell v Russell. While Scott probably won the battle by carrying his bat, it was Dougie what won the war with the Cross victory!!! Ellis & Millington continued, the former battering 3x6's before retiring (mandatory) at 30. Milly perished, I holed out to square leg, but Dougie then reached 30, putting two not-outers back in the hutch. Vik fell with a trademark blast off the roof that got pouched. I think Gary was then run out bringing the incomparable Ellis and the indomitable Russell together. However Ellis sacrificed his wicket in the chase for runs and we finished with a well nice, but not spectacular 129. Tranent whapped 18 off the first over, but within 3-4 overs a couple of wickets fell and the scoring subdued and the result became inevitable.
All in all a very calm and assured performance. We weren't tested to our limits perhaps, but we were very happy with our poise (?) and I'm sure I speak for the whole team in saying it was a very enjoyable run-out.

Indoor cricket.
Holy Cross have
entered the inaugural ‘LiveSportOn.TV ESCA Indoor 6's’.
For some, the words cricket, indoor & league may summon up memories of this (surely-alongside The Ascent of Man, The Singing Detective and Threads- the crowing glory of British television), in fact this competition involves something akin to cricket...
For some, the words cricket, indoor & league may summon up memories of this (surely-alongside The Ascent of Man, The Singing Detective and Threads- the crowing glory of British television), in fact this competition involves something akin to cricket...
Now we just need a team…
Gary T and Cje play a proper athletic indoor sport but since the rest of you spending the
winter evenings slumped in front of the XFactor, you could perhaps do with some
exercise.
Can anyone interested please leave a
comment to that effect-or email Jon.
We need a volunteer to organize the
side…go ahead-seize the opportunity! …if might influence the selection committee currently engaged in
the task of nailing down a captain for the 1sts for next season.
Details of the competition:
‘The competition
will take the same format as the cricket Scotland tournament with 4 groups
containing 3 teams in each. The 3 teams in each group will attend on the
same night and play round robin, each team will take part in 2 nights thus
getting gets 4 games in total throughout the tournament. Each of the 4
group winners would then attend the finals night for 2 Semi-Finals and a Final
being held.
This will be run every Friday night
from 20th January to 16th March 2012 at Liberton High School, the 1st game on
each evening will start at 6.30pm prompt’.
