HX Lookalikeys cont.

Once again no cricket means me stepping into the gap to (attempt to) entertain the fine defenders of Fortress Arboretum. Here's a peach I've been meaning to air for a while.

It must be said that despite his high end breeding, it appears that Lord Admin has a rather common fizzog although in this case the barnet is a great match too.

Not too long after his rag & bone impression, another of his doppelgangers has come to light.

Decide for yourself...

Lord Arboretum

Fans of BBC comedy The Thick of It will immediately know of whom I speak.

Good lord, it isn't is it???

The resemblance is uncanny (smile aside)!!!  Are they by any chance related??? We should be told!!!

League Weekend 10 and the Week Ahead

All three XIs' Saturday games have now been called off. The only good news is that this means that the 2nds win their three match "Arbofield" series against the Accies 1-0.

Tuesday night's friendly against the Old Contemptibles is off.

On Thursday night we take on Edinburgh in the Presidents Trophy quarter final at Arbo.

A week on Sunday (8th July) we travel westwards to either Glasgow or Irvine for the CS Challenge semi final.

Plate Tie postponed

Tonight's President's Plate match between HX 2's and Casuals is OFF. Well, the Meadows used to be a loch...maybe again if this continues...

Game rescheduled for Thursday 12th July at the Meadows.

The Sun DID always shine..

Given the current period of poor weather, it's tempting to believe that we are experiencing a uniquely wet cricket season.  One senior Crosser has posited that since 1996 the summers weather in the Edinburgh area have become decidedly wetter-more like Glasgow.  Is he right?

The weather was always like this
The figures below suggest that -as with popular music-things really were better in the past...  Or are there other reasons why more fixtures were completed? Tougher men? Were cancelled games resheduled?

Cupdates

Presidents Trophy QF vs Edinburgh now set for Arbo on Thursday 5th July.

CS Challenge SF vs Glasgow Accies or Irvine, away on Sunday 8th July.

A full list of cup commitments can be found here.

Cross make Semi at Soggy Arbo.

HX made it through to the semi finals of the CS Challenge Cup with a win over Marchmont. As usual, Arbo had drained well and was playable after the deluge on Friday which had caused a mini-lake to form in the Ferry Road/ Arboretum Road corner. As could be expected the wicket was very soft - especially after a sharp shower that halted the match after just 4 balls.

A slight breakdown in communications/some people refusing to confirm till the last moment meant that an unprecedented 15 Crossers turned up. The 11 that were finally entered on the team sheet were the usual 'Sunday mix' of 1sts, 2nd and 3rd XI players.

Dougie was in a no-nonsense mood: Irfan & Abdul were dropped for turning up late... Then Sandy failed to impress with his fielding in the first 4 balls and was axed during the rain delay.

With most of the 'proper' 1st XI bowlers absent, HX's back-up bowlers did a decent job of keeping the ball in the right areas, aware that the soft pitch would make batting very tricky. Andy K taking a wicket with the 1st ball after the resumption - Si casually pouching the slip catch. Decent spells from the returning Andy K, Simon and cje helped keep the run-rate low before some slightly looser bowling/fielding and more enterprising batting from Gandhi and Chetty gave the Marchmont
innings some momentum and some power hitting from Van Jaarsveld (till well held by Ziggy in the deep) helped the visitors to a defendable 136.

New boy Fin opened with KF and they started solidly as Marchmont opened up with their slower bowlers. Fin got a good one from Collier and cje and KF put on a steady partnership before cje picked out the only man in the deep from a full-bunger. Simon continued his fine season with another display of fluent batting and took control of the game. He was well supported by KF and Dougie (hitting nicely over the top).

Though KF, Jon and Dougie also fell, HX completed a fairly comfortable victory.

p.s. a pair of Hunts 'Clipper' batting gloves were left in the HX changing room -they are now in the Green Room.

Weekend Update, Wednesday Nets

All Saturday games are now off. Arbo is very wet with some good puddles on the Arboretum Road side including a small pond at fine leg, although nothing to compare with some of the loch-lets in Inverleith Park.

All that said, Sunday's CS Challenge tie is still on. As Marchmont have a League game next Sunday we need to produce a result tomorrow, one way or another. Further updates by Twitter.

Given the limited opportunities to play in recent weeks, we've booked nets at Newfield on Wednesday night although (surprise, surprise) the forecast is currently for more rain.

Breaking..> message from Watsonians: I understand that there is no chance of play at Myreside tonight despite the sunshine but we will hopefully be able to get the game played tomorrow night.

Cross Scrape Trophy Win

President's Trophy 2nd Round (at Arboretum-switched due to Dresselrig being unplayable)
played as 20 over match on June 14th.

Holy Cross 131-7 (C. Ellis 50 (46), R. Javed 36 (29), M. Collings 3-19)
Livingston 119-8 (S. Kumar 37, R. Bowering 24)

A good tight game played on a rare nice dry evening (could be the last game for a while given the rain falling at present..) Livi did well to limit HX to a sub-par 131.

cje-after a shaky start- batted solidly enough and Raja found a bit of form but no batsmen really dominated and Collings' good spell and a late rash of run outs prevented us from reaching a par total (given the fast outfield and firm pitch) of 150-odd. Bimbo's stumping (by half the length of the pitch!!) may well receive a mention at the awards night.

Then the impressive Kumar well supported by Bowering took Livi to 72 off 11 before a run-out and then  a reckless shot from Kumar put the game in HX's favour. Good batting from Duvvuri helped Livi to 104 off 16 -at which point they were marginal favourites. His run out and tighter HX bowling helped the home side close out the game. Given that we had a strong bowling unit on display, we perhaps could have kept Livi quieter earlier-and not allowed so many boundaries. But an impressive performance from Livi's talented team and hopefully a 'wake-up call' for the 1sts.

League Weekend 8 and the Week Ahead

Scheduled fixtures for this weekend -
  • Saturday, 1sts vs Musselburgh at Arbo.
  • Saturday, 2nds vs Musselburgh 2nds, away.
  • Saturday, 3rds vs SMRH 3rds at Campbell Park.
  • Sunday, CS Challenge quarter final vs Marchmont at Arbo - umpires, I Ahmed and J Wilson.
Midweek -
  • Monday, Murgitroyd Masterton Trophy quarter final vs Watsonians at Myreside.
  • Thursday, Parks Trophy quarter final vs Teuchters at Arbo.
Please note that there are no nets this week.

Tranent Trounce Thirds

[pvb reports on the 3rds]

HX 3rds v Tranent

Tranent’s talented side deservedly trounced Holy Cross at Campbell Park, but one has to say that it was not a great contest.  Mark Anderson’s wonderful display of hitting gave HX too big a target (265); but it wasn’t just him – Aiden’s powerful strokes over extra cover and Adnan’s lofted drives gave Tranent a fine start. Keith bowled splendidly and took 2-24.

I noticed a tweet which mentioned that Mike dropped Mark on nought – a tad harsh I think since half our side would not even have managed to run the 20 metres to get their hands to it – it was a splendid effort. So was Ted’s brilliant slip catch – Ian Bell should be taking lessons from him. Dave Sharpe’s absence meant that we used 9 bowlers and a first wkt ever for Ted, a first wkt in 10 years for Paul, and a first wkt off a double bouncer for Craig. There was serious danger of the game being abandoned as ball after ball vanished over the hedge, and pvb was pondering what happened if neither side had a ball to play with – match abandoned I guess.

After last week when the team went form 22-0 to 45 all out in 12 overs, some caution was needed, so Paul tried to bore Tranent to death. Mind you it is not simple scoring off Adnan who bowls the majority of his inswinging balls on a good length on leg stick and then swinging down leg, and Mark as we know would test Div 1 batsmen. Our own Mark C woke everyone up when he came in with his extravagant shots and topscored with 31; we were aiming to get 150 which would have been maximum losing points. As with Hawick Tranent has no weak bowlers, and reaching the 150 target looked a pipe dream till Mark called Paul for a quick single to gully – it was a masterstroke and brought  other freeflowing batsmen to the crease. After a short downpour Richard hit a wonderful 6 over long on and 18 quick runs, Keith followed suit with a lofted four off Mark’s ninth over ( yes ninth – but a diplomatic solution was amicably reached), and we scored 135 – 9 bonus points in all, perhaps a little generous for such a thumping .

Thanks to Tranent & Scott for excellent hospitality at Campbell Park; theAsian lads have transformed  the team and they would compete well in Div 3 / 4, and we wish them well.

Cross Cruise to Victory

ESCA Div 1-at Roseburn.

Holy Cross 1st XI 186-7 (McOscar 65, Fraser 38, Smith 37) J. Zarkoob 3-33

MDafs 1st XI 98ao (Akerkar 35) Bonfield 4-13, Russell 3-28.

full scorecard here

Dougie's rotation policy meant that Owais and GT were rested: Bimbo and Quinn coming in.
Thursday and Friday's rain left a soft Roseburn pitch but the weather was generally fine on the day-though few showers dampened things.

HX's 186-7 was built upon a very solid platform: a patient 38 from KF and another classy, high tempo knock from Simon (65 off 73). 186 was a very good score given the slow pitch and outfield and the lengthy boundaries (no sixes and only 7 fours in the match despite some good hitting).

MDafs made it easy for Simon by bowling to him on a a different-far better pitch- than the others had to bat on... We reached a very healthy 100-1 at drinks but a good spell from Akerkar (conceding 7 from his 1st 8 overs) and McOscar's slightly tame dismissal (stumped off wheeler) slowed things down.
EC (37 off 40) -in his final innings before leaving for Manchester- added impetus to the innings and though we lost a few cheap wickets (hard luck Beezer! Hope the jet lag has worn off Andy!), he, Shannon (11*) and Bimbo (4* off 2 balls) [I better mention his contribution as he'll only complain..].

Parsimonious spells from Raja and Bimbo  (both 1-5 off 5) kept the MDafs top order under constant pressure as they limped to 24-3 off 16 overs.
Some positive batting from Jaffery and Sorrell gave the innings some momentum before the Akerkar (assisted by cje's long-hops) threatened to get MDafs into the game (72-4 off 29). Shannon dismissed Sorrell with a lovely slower ball before he got Akerkar for a classy 35 (nicely snaffled by KF)  before Dougie took 3 wickets (Simon taking a nice catch at Long on and Shannon one at slip-via KF's gloves..) to bring the contest to a conclusion. Shannon took the final wicket to finish with 4-13.
New boy Jack Beesley impressed with his superb fielding...if only we had 11 fielders like him and Tom... Cheers too to Sandy for stepping in at the last moment, scoring etc.

Another solid performance with bat and ball from HX Ists.

Club About To Get A Whole Lot Uglier

As our former part-time skipper and easily the best looking dude on Planet Arbo (apologies Nozza) is about to take his winning smile to Madchester in pursuit of some golden shekels, I thought what better a time could there be to run through some photo's to remind us in years to come of his impact at our great club.

After leaving university, E.C. launched his crooning career via the star making vehicle X-Factor, the show we all know and love. With the surname Smith already taken, E.C. had to come up with something snazzy and chose to adopt the psuedonym Joe McElderry.

Fame came with its downside though. Often seen around the city in his little red 'rooster' extension the ladies began to swarm all over our innocent hero. Despite his apparent happiness in the photo above, these smiling eyes hide the pain of a man looking for more than 365 different lovers a year (?). Bad times and persistent hair loss were just around the corner.

Celebrities queued up to get a piece of the action. Here is our former skip in 2009 with Fauldhouse counterpart Gok Wan. Relations cooled when Wan criticised the size of our man's shovels during a Tea Break. Fellow first teamers of the time are still unsure if this is the "psycho bird" he used to refer to around this time.

Here is our departing friend cosying up to the ex-wife of sabbatical wicketkeeper, Si Hackering of Geordie Shore fame. The pair have always denied tabloid claims that they "did it in the boot of Smudgers Volvo" although alleged cctv footage does exist of nocturnal goings on in the 'Arbo container'.

In 2007 the Smith clan were rocked to their foundations when a long lost son of Smudger appeared. Here is E.C. with his half-brother D.J. Like Papa Smudger, they share a love of Barry Manilow, facial hair and crack cocaine.

Once the celebrity lifestyle spiralled out of control, close friends, family and Crossers were shocked to see the above photo appear on the front page of the now defunct News of the World. Summoned by El Presidente to the Green Room for urgent talks, E.C. agreed to leave the vacuous pop world behind and apply himself to the game of cricket.

Now crooning purely for fun in his spare time, E.C. has rediscovered what makes him tick. Mainly this is repeating his one shot whilst batting, bowling comedy wides or belting out Manilow hits on the top deck of the 27 bus. Recently E.C. vowed 'never to take a catch again' and stuck to his promise with a rotten drop v East Academy.

That's surely enough for now folks. Although we've lost two young Smith's in as many months, when E.C. was reminded that our Constitution declares Smudger must provide a male heir for selection, E.C. quipped "I'm sure the old man's loins are still fertile".

On that note...

EC's last chance...

EC has a final chance on Saturday to notch up his maiden 1st XI league century.

Here is the Roseburn Pitch (photoed last night) on which he hopes to achieve his goal.
Chances of success??

Can EC pull on this?

Match report VS Marchmont

I can't really remember much about last Saturday but felt I should write a report. I think it went a little like this.

We bowled first, Raja got a wicket early doors. The opener and Matt Loeffen offered some good resistance with Loeffen hitting the vast majority of his 30 odd in boundries so it was a relif to get him out. Shanners it was, with a peach of a delivery.

Wickets fell pretty regulalry from there and Marchmont were all out for 130/140. 4 for Raja, 2 for Bonners, 2 for me and 1 a peice for Gary and CJE I believe.

Tea was nice.

Then we batted.

Owais was out early doors but Keith and Chuckie saw us home, KF with 80 odd fine runs. We made the total for the loss of one wicket in the 30 something over. A ruddy good peformance by one and all.

Moving on another derby clash this weekend vs Mufs.

Super Ted Saves Cross

In the absence of a match report from Sunday...this picture tells you all you need to know about a game completely lacking drama or any aspect worthy of comment...boring..

The law is an ass

Crossers will be aware that as well as terrorising East League bowlers our own EC Smith is equally well known for terrorising courtrooms across the land. Unfortunately his reputation for litigation has attracted a big money summer transfer and he'll be heading off to the bright lights of Manchester in two weeks.

In honour of his 16 (surely he only looks 15!) years at the club drinks will be held in the green room and latterly in Stockbridge this Saturday after the game.

EC looks forward to buying everyone who attends a pint!

Handbags and Beer Rags

[Andy G reports on some 20 over midweek madness- annotations from cje]

Coco's select XI welcomed Maccabi for the first midweek friendly of the season. I'm not going to remember all the details just a brief summary [really?] to keep the fans entertained. Coco - with 12 players - won the toss we batted first. Sandy was forced kindly went to play for Maccabi as they were short.

Mike Nevin and Vikram Gaware opened with the tactic of all out attack! We screamed [?] to 16 off 2 when Vikram fell to the dazzling [? it was raining] spin of Adeel (from Murrayfield - Dafs) out came Andy Graham and blocked the last ball of the over.

Gus McLean was bowling from the other end and Coco was umpiring. Let the jousting begin...

Gus bowled a quicker delivery and it bounced high off  a stone the pitch possibly hitting Mike Nevin's bat and beating the  bemused wicketkeeper. We ran a run/bye and Coco didn't flinch. Uproar from Gus!! He wanted the bye - these friendlies count to official ICC Scottish cricket bowling averages you know! The handbags were out ... Coco with a 1980's pink number with metal studs and Gus with a blue leather clutch bag. Coco referred to a wide that Gus had given previously (probably in 1978 [actually June 4th 2007]) where the batsman nicked the ball to second slip! The next ball was bowled and the over was over, and the handbags were tucked away ready for round 2.

Back to the cricket - Mike and Andy put on a good few runs until Mike was bowled by a good delivery by Mr Malik (Suli was back at Arbo!)
No 4 was Brian Fraser he came in, sliced spanked Suli for a four ... I think ... but then tried to play across the line and was given out LBW by Coco - a ludicrous decision   fair I think ... No 5 [no 5-was KF doing the batting order....grrr] Smudger comes trotting in he smashed Suli for another 4 - conceding circa 10 runs from his last over - was quite good fun and but beware this over just made him [who-Suli or Smudger?] angry!

Alex looked good for the few balls that he faced, hitting some sweet shots but finding the fielders,  he was bowled playing down the wrong line by a good ball that cut in off the sodden skiddy pitch.

Ross Parker stepped in around the 16 over mark and partnered Andy to his 50 - he was on 40 when Smudger was out - AG batted a lot more conservatively for his final 10-and all those present some observers questioned his ambition to go for another 50 #tightfisted !

Jug No.1 done

Andy retired and debutant Kevin Marsh came in, he smashed a couple of runs and with the final ball of the innings hit a 6 six towards the rugby posts...

A 6 on debut - Jug No.2 ??

Ross and Kevin saw us through to the 20 overs and we ended on 125 for 4. So we went out with a ok strong total and a bowling line up to die for [??].

Opening with debutant Kevin and the veteran Smudger we had change bowlers of Coco and Ross Parker and couple of surprises... Kevin and Smudger got off to a good start with some excellent bowling ... Unfortunately the batting was strong.

Adeel's dad smashed balls through point, cow corner, square leg and the covers and his partner ... Well he wasn't bad either...it was Mr Suliman Malik ... Back to thrash those who taught him the game. The majority of his shots in true Suli fashion were straight of the bowler's head and quite a few shots to cow [some things don't change].

Great innings from the elder brother - and he gloated about finishing on 52 - 2 runs more than me!

After 10 overs Maccabi had 80 runs - they were doing well so Adeel's dad stupidly sportingly tried to reverse sweep Coco off middle stump - the first of his 3 wicket haul!

No3. Another crosser??? Michael Baker [aka MFTRC] steps in - after being padded up for the last 20 overs he took an age to readjust his helmet and gloves! He felt hard done by about not getting a bat so he deffered to the opposition at halftime and convinced them to put him in at 3... This is why they were hitting all of those runs, we only had 10 in the field!

He faced the pace and Coco got him on the fourth attempt - after Vikram dropped him at slip!

Wait! was this an HX intra-club friendly ... Sandy Robertson came in to bat and quickly sighed as he saw coco had an over left - he lasted a few balls and hit a couple of runs but then fell to Coco's pace. With 3 wickets coco was a bit happier ... But ding ding the bell went round 2..

Coco had a tidy over going for about 3 or 4 and he had bowled 6 balls so the square leg umpire started to approach, the batsman plodded around the wicket and I started having a between over chat with the batsman.

But no there was a mystery wide and and Gus wanted another ball - and the handbags were out again.

There were flashes of pink and blue as the two old timers pinged stories of dubious wides and no balls from the 70s and 80s I didn't catch any specific examples but I'm sure there was some chat of Portobello Baths!

Now they only had about 15-20 over the final 5 or so overs. Unfortunately Vikram 'old man' Gaware is injured and wanted to save himself for Saturday [what for-cricket?? or hauling white goods from John Lewis] so we had a trio of exciting, flighty [?] and and at some points [?] the best balls of the game!

BAF was the first to turn his arm over and his first ball was awesome!
He tossed it so high that when it returned to the [Earth's] surface it had snow on it, it turned and rolled under beat the bat. Just fantastic, it was just a shame he was only able to replicate it once more in his over;  when he got Adeel out -caught and bowled.

Next up: Alex Candilish his first 2 balls were wides but then he found his rhythm ... Just excellent, going both ways off the pitch [the same delivery] and he put it just in the right spot for the batsman to put it straight in front of Smudger and he fell jumped forward to catch it for Alex's first wicket (EVER!- not just for the Cross) .

Jug No. 3 and possibly 4 - first wicket for the Cross and first wicket ever.

2 balls later he put another in the same spot but this time the ball was hit sweeter and unfortunately Smudger at short extra cover  did an EC   wasn't able to hold it.

The last over went to [Sunday's hero] Ted:  he bowled two yards outside off, toying with the batsman to hit the final runs, after missing two the batsman finally caught one  [howzat!?] and the game was over.

126-5.. we were beaten by a good batting side.

Fraser’s on top form as Holy Cross notch up third success of season

In the absence of an 'Offishal' Match Report, here is Gary Heatly from the Edinburgh Evening News with his take on Saturday's win v Marchmont

Holy Cross recorded their third win of the East One season with a comfortable victory over Marchmont on Saturday.

Fielding first the home side put in a good shift at Arboretum to see the men from Cavalry Park dismissed for 138. Raja Javed was the pick of the attack with 4-42 while for the visitors Alan Renwick and Matt Loeffen both dug in for 33 each.

In reply Keith Fraser and Charlie Ellis were on top form as Holy Cross won by nine wickets, Fraser scoring 81 not out and well supported by the latter with 41 not out.
