Thirds pipped in 'cracking game'

Division 8
Teuchters Cricket Club 1st XI vs Holy Cross Cricket Club 3rd XI
[match report by James Gray of Teuchters CC from the ESCA Forum-reproduced with permission]

Captain Bartsch lost his fifth consecutive toss in the shadow of Murryafield stadium, where Teuchters had broken league records just two weeks previously, and was consequently asked to bowl in the hot afternoon sun. The bowling was tight, and run-rate was kept under control early on, with Styles picking up an early wicket. After the initial discipline, the sun got the better of the fielding side, catches went down, and the Holy Cross middle order cashed in style, launching the first and second match ball irretrievably into the SRU's back garden. Bartsch, in desperation, brought himself on as the seventh bowler of the innings, and it proved inspired, as regular wickets fell from 102-2 to 150 all out. Bartsch picked of five of them, and Styles three more, but it had been a hard slog to bowl in the heat on a batting arti at Roseburn, and 152 was the target.

The skipper opened up with Gray, and started in typically confident fashion while his partner battered down the hatches. While in good form, Bartsch drove firmly but uppishly to mid-off, where he was well taken by Graham for 25. Jones came to the wicket, and also looked confident making 28 before missing a straight one. Clark joined Gray, and quickly out-scored him as well. The opening bowlers bowled through, and when the change inevitably came it was Morcom's left arm swing which removed Gray, bowled through the gate. At 110-4, Teuchters were still confident with Clark still at the wicket. All of sudden, Marrs, Murray, Simpson and then Clark all fell in quick succession, the last three all to Morcom, whose prodigious swing caused all sorts of problems. It left Styles, on the back of an excellent bowling performance, batting with number 10, Graham Inch, with 33 to win, and no 11 not to be trusted. The tension was unbearable as Ellis' wily out-swingers beat the bat time and again. Both players survived appeals, and pick up singles here and there, and then the pivotal over came, 19 to win and Morcom to Styles. A couple of singles, and then Styles launched a full toss over mid-wicket for six. Two more boundaries followed and as suddenly as it had started, it finished, Teuchters home by 2 wickets.

Apologies for the garble but it was a cracking game, which either side could have won, and was played in the best of spirits on a cracking day.

Final Scores
Holy Cross 3rd XI - 152 all out (Sharpe 34 (I think), Bartsch 5-30, Styles 4-8)
lost to
Teuchters 1st XI - 155-8 (Clark 34, Jones, 28, Morcom 5-42)
