Last Trophy of 2011: First of 2012..
Presidents Trophy Final Replay -29/4/12
At Grange Loan.
Fauldhouse 103ao (33.5 overs)
D. Mulligan 51
S. Bonfield 6-11
Holy Cross 104/4 (29 overs)
D. Russell 40
D. Law 2-28
Possibly too cold for cricket..
Cheers to:
Carlton CC for hosting and preparing a good strip.
The umpires (Bruce Dixon and Jim Brims) for sticking it out in such dire weather.
Popey for travelling up and stepping in as sub keeper.
Roshan for turning out and putting in a good shift in the field.
Coco and Jon for scoring.
Good catches to dismiss Zahid (EC) and Derek (Andy Q) were crucial to keeping the Fauldhouse score low. Shannon in fine form - off stump taking a bit of a beating.
...breaking news...
more good news.. Nozzer makes the semi-final of his Pool tournament...
Coastal Ken in record breaking form..
PVB reports on HX 3 v Morton (Campbell Park)
HX 3rds (Dad’s army) were well beaten by a sporting Morton 2nds side at CP. With Andy and Ross hotfooting it from their morning hockey game, we were always going to two short at the start – putting our average age at about 58 for the first hour! Once they arrived it was reduced to a more respectable 51, which is two less than the number of balls it took Coastal Ken to get off the mark. Maybe the immense preparations required to play at Campbell Pk tired him out - he is like a packhorse as he uncomplainingly drags bagfuls of kit / stumps / food / mugs / teapot / beakers / teabags / milk / kitchen sink…
So Ken eclipsed Andy Greig’s league record of 51 balls to get going at Falkland in 1982 – again when we were two players short for an hour. Coco racked his brains at tea in search of a JLRB innings of the same ilk.
The pitch was a shade slower than the indoor nets, and the outfield was uncut. Our total could have been worse as Morton were very generous in spilling numerous catches, and it would have been far worse but for a magnificent innings from Ross Parker who punished the bad ball brilliantly. He scored two sixes, and put on 33 for the 9th wicket with Willie Lytle who also struck the ball really well. Ross scored 35* off 34 balls approx.
We didn’t bowl badly but Morton were more positive with their shots and took risks with their running. To our credit we didn’t drop a thing and Richard took a lovely catch at long-on; nor was extras our downfall with only a single wide called by Morton’s fair umpires. Mahmood and Andy shared keeping duties and really looked the part.
How pleasant to play in a match where both sides appreciated the skills of their opponents; Morton’s skipper even apologised after hitting me on my toes!

Two Docs
Saturday marks a new era for the Cross with Two-Dogs-in his 20/21st season with the club-due to make his 2nd XI debut...as a batsman. However, one wonders how he will find the time with his business interests, chairing various Tourism bodies, newspaper scribbling etc ...and also his acting and ....now singing commitments.

Dry Defeat
After the 1sts' win over Edinburgh on Saturday (see "Soggy Success" below), a combined 2nds/3rds took on Dunfermline Wanderers, our frequent pre-season opponents of recent years, on Sunday.
Despite a beautiful, warm, sunny afternoon, the Arbo pitch was still damp and lively from the previous week's rain and some surprisingly accurate bowling from both attacks demanded considerable concentration from the batsmen.
For the Cross only Irfan really responded with a patient 35 in what at first seemed a very sub-par 102 all out off the last ball. But after another good opening spell from Usama, the spinners pulled us back into the game, as Abdul got a couple of wickets in a miserly spell and JB three in a rather more generous one. With 10 needed and 8 wickets down, we were right back in it, but the Wanderers held their nerve and won with three overs to spare.
Many thanks to the Wanderers and their charming travelling support for a game played in a typically good spirit. Thanks too to Michael for stepping in at the last moment and congratulations to Shaun on his debut.

Final over win for Keith's Codgers
Keith's Codgers
199/ 3 (35 overs)
O. Mazher 50* (retired)
C. Ellis 52* (retired)
K. Fraser 38*
E. C. Smith 33
Raja: 8/1/33/1
G. Trewartha: 8/0/31/0
D. Russell: 6/0/58/0
J. Bates: 8/1/53/1
N. Webb: 5/0/19/0
Dougie's Dandies
191/ 8 (35 overs)
R. Javed 71
D. Russell 32
G. Trewartha 33
C. McGill 8/1/29/0
C. O. Smith: 8/0/44/2
C. Ellis: 8/0/47/5
E. Smith: 3/0/22/1
S. McCosker 8/0/35/0
Despite a wicket that looked decent but was a bit of a pudding and some
periods of cold weather, we managed a enjoyable inter-club match (I'll leave aside the abject standard of the tea bags bags we had to use: hopefully this will soon be rectified) .
Everyone (bar Norrie) managed some valuable time in the middle and the bowlers got some overs under their belts. Good testing spells from Raja, GT & Simon, while Smudger and Coco did well to keep things tight against strong batting. Undoubtedly there was some friendly bowling on offer but some of the batting was impressive-Dougie getting some rough treatment from Owais and EC.
Raja got close to achieving the 25 needed of the last over...though cje may come under suspicion for his decision to bowl 'leg spin'.
Moment of the match:
EC's dismissal of GT with a surprise (genuinely) good ball. No footage exists but EC insists that the dismissal at 3.17 in this video is a virtual replica.
Special mention: 2 stumpings for Smudger! Plus a 40 mins spell on the roller in heavy rain!

Lynch Hangs Up His Sandals
Teenagers of the East League rejoice, frequenters of the green room weep.
Sad news may have spread amongst Crossers that after surviving two winters The Bishop can't face another gruelling summer in Scotland, is packing CA in his bag and heading back down under.
Leaving drinks are planned for Saturday 14th April at a location to be confirmed. Save the date.
