3rd XI v Morton 2nd XI

Bathed in bright sunlight and surrounded by a noisy funfair, HX 3rd XI got under way a little late after the rain left some damp patches.

At about 3.30 Morton 2nd XI were about 98-8 after 33 overs which may not sound a lot, but on a wet Meadows with relatively long grass, I would think it is worth 130-140. Only one four has been scored.

Dave took 3-33, and Keith, coming on quite late has taken 3 wickets in 3 overs. The catching has been very impressive with Mike taking two, and Andy Quinn probably two - Morton were singing his praises for the 1st catch (if it was him) which they said was wonderful. Dave Sharpe got a catch off a no-ball.

  1. Morton were all out for 104 which was not a simple target at the Meadows. Two patient innings by Scott and Ken took us past 50 for the loss of one wicket.

Then HX indulged in one of their famous collapses, losing 6 quick wickets including Dave Sharpe; he likes a bit of action when a noball is bowled so having caught one of their chappies off one, he went and ran himself out on another. So the ball was in Morton's court at 67-7 - I arrived to see Richard smite a lovely four over mid-on with his new bat, and he put on quite a few with Usama.

Morton had some useful bowlers and we still needed about 17 when the 9th wicket fell. By now Morton were on to their 8th bowler (I think), and Keith took advantage of this; Popey played his part as we got up to 100 with 7 balls left, and we were looking forward to an exciting last over when Popey got bowled, going for a four over mid wicket. Very enjoyable but lost by 4 runs.

  2. Some great catches especially from Mike Nevin, saw Mortan all out for 104. Chasing 105, Mike fell early for 4, and then Ken (15) and Scott (18) with the assistance of extras saw us to 51-1 off 20 overs.

We then conspired to collapse to 85 for 9, Keith and I saw off the returning opener, (just about from me) and the some good running from us, got us to 100-9 with 7 balls remaining, an ugly swipe from me missed the ball and i got bowled, lost by 4 runs with an over remaining.

Pretty gutted, really thought Keith and I would do it.

  3. . and I forgot to mention that Morton's opening bowlers Farrell and Malik had extremely impressive figures.

  4. Some will say that the almost total wash-out of the East League schedule left the reporters little else to comment on, but I say the 3rds are finelly getting the attention they deserve. Here's the Evening News' account of proceedings in the Meadows on Saturday - http://edinburghnews.scotsman.com/sport/Cricket-Morton--joy-in.5559593.jp
