3rds weird game
ReplyDeleteThis was a game of delays. The toss took place at 5 past one – then more delay for a few fags, so at 1.20 Mike and Paul strolled out and stood in the middle and waited. There were plenty of pies on offer, plenty of extras and plenty of surreal cricket. Leith seemed to be employing the HX democratic method of captaincy until John the keeper tried to move a fielder, another fielder exchanged f words with him, handbags at dawn looked likely, then the keeper walked off but thought better of it.
Mike was back in the pavilion lbw when a splendid piece of sportsmanship by Jamie Shepherd recalled him as he really didn’t want to see anyone so unhappy. Well done Jamie! Up their sleeve Leith had a debutant – Jamie told me that he drives taxis and this was a new recruit from a taxi run – Shannon and Brian please note! The young Indian(?) was a bit wayward but he needed boots and went off to find some – Leith saw this as a great opportunity for a few more fags and considerable delay. Paul and Mike brought up a break, Paul tried to cart everything into the bowling green, missed one and departed for some score or other – pvb counted 73, the scorers had 61 and the arbitration panel settled for 65; scorer Keith cited sleepless nights following son number two’s arrival, and frequent bowling changes and interminable delays!
Ross scored a very stylish 30 and Mahmood & Amjit double figures but the Indian recruit was a class above Div 8 and runs dried up except for extras. The keeper was now invited to bowl, so off went his replacement to the pavilion and another long fags break ensued. To get the runs moving Mahmood called for a single to silly mid off - bye bye Ken.
Anyway everyone had a bat and 230 wasn’t bad with extras more than 50. The 40 over crawl was over at 4.15.
Dave and Amjit then speeded things up as we bowled 18 overs in 50 minutes.
Then Richard took a few quick wickets and Leith had no-one padded up, hence another delay – so drinks were taken after 18.3 overs except that there were no beakers – plenty of juice but no beakers. We got going again but then the opener needed some paracetamol and Ken departed to find some, hence another long delay – plenty of chewing gum but no pills – then the opener, Jamie, needed a second can of coke! It wasn’t his day – he hit five fours, but the scorers credited him with only two. Richard tempted him in his first over, and he departed – but not for long, soon returning as umpire.
The previous umpire went off to pad up but as Leith had no umpire he was told to come back and umpire with his pads on. The keeper then gave Richard some serious tap (46), after a 4 wkt haul. Keith bowled a wonderful spell, an unplayable ball bowling the very promising young Indian. Now we had a new umpire with a bottle of beer in one hand and a fag in the other, reclining at square leg as if at a Roman banquet – he had lost his lighter and was delighted that Coco could oblige him with a light. Then Coco ambled after a ball from slip to fine leg, and the foolish batsmen urged on by beerswilling coleagues took on Coco's mighty arm as he attempted a three; ask Coco about it and he will talk you through it!
I meant to add that Leith were excellent hosts - excellent tea, splendid sportsmanship & good banter.
