Scott and Charlie are getting ever closer to completing the epic work begun by Hugh and producing a complete set of Holy Cross statistics all the way back to 1950. All that now seems to be missing are the 2004 averages for the 3rd XI. If anyone has carefully archived CoCo's end of season figures please comment below.
A small, friendly cricket club based in north Edinburgh, near Inverleith Park and the Botanics. We put out two Saturday elevens in the East League in Divisions 4 and 7 and play midweek cup ties and friendlies. Still no sign of 2004 stats being found I'm afraid.
ReplyDeleteI'm delving through myriads of files and have at least found a 2004 match report of Richard Ellis' magnificent 96 at Dunbar. Fortunately the figures for the bowlers who suffered at the hands of Mr Greco are not available. So here's the report:

Heroic All Round Performance by Ellis Fails to Save Much Weakened Cross Side
A magnificent performance by senior professional Richard Ellis just failed to save a much weakened Cross side from defeat.
In what was without any shadow of a doubt the crunch match of the season for the thirds, Cross fielded their weakest team of the year further exacerbated by the failure of one of our players to appear. Facing the strongest team in the league with only 10 men, short on batting and bowling, and a pretty immobile fielding side on an artificial track, Cross became the only team to keep Dunbar below 200 all season. Dunbar reached 182-7 from their allotted 40 overs, although at one stage it looked like they might break the 200 mark.
Richard Ellis, his first 6 overs having gone for 33, was facing the chop but thankfully recognising that his bowling spell might come to an abrupt end if things did not improve, then took 4 wickets for 22 from his last 5 overs and also threw in a run out as well. His spell was supported by good performances by all the other 4 Cross bowlers with Mathews and Srivastava both taking a wicket each.
In reply Cross got off to a shocker losing surprise opener Mathews for zero and star batsman Bailey for 5. Din, having previously shocked the entire Cross team in particular and world cricket in general, by holding a catch, (Wisden have been informed), then steadied the ship along with Ellis before having to leave the field following a rather nasty blow. Geddes failed again, leaving Cross in a desperate position. Crawford "Slasher" McKay then hit a quick fire 19 which seemed to spark Ellis into action. Having scored 1 off his first 21 balls, Ellis reached his 50 from 76 balls and finished on 96 from 90 balls. He featured in a 50 partnership with young James Bailey (7) who showed us old hacks that technique is everything,(and out scored his Dad-double pocket money this week Paul!) and put on further runs with Qasim Malik (10 not out). Our 40 overs expired with the total at 163-8, Ellis just failing to reach a deserved 100 as fatigue set in.
Richard scored 11 4's and 3 sixes and put most of the rest of us to shame. To mark his magnificent efforts he was presented with the match ball after the game. Whatever happens in terms of individual performances for the rest of the season, he is the thirds player of the season.
With such a weakened team Cross performed magnificently; unfortunately, despite our efforts, it could well be a further season in Div 8. Despite having such a seriously weakened team we secured 9 points, only one fewer that the maximum achievable while losing-a great effort particularly against the strongest team in the league."
