Shifty is nifty but can't reach 50 as 3s win by 10 wickets

The Pope may be heading to the Capital next month to offer hope to his followers, however today's arrival of His Holiness the Shifty of the Holy Cross at Campbell Park saw a blessing in disguise for the 3s who lost their Prodigal Son Ken of Coastal to the 2nds earlier in the day.

Shifty, returning from a Beckham-esque foot injury, was keen to return following a 7 week layoff and also starring for a limited period only was Brian Fraser.

The visitors of Stew Mel batted first and both Sharpe and Ray bagged themselves 3-fors in the process. Ray also earned himself an extra hat-trick, but unfortunately for the man from Tranent, this was for a trio of dropped catches!!

The finest moment of the bowling came when Geddes forced Higgins to nick a teasing delivery past McGill but not Sharpe who swooped like a seagull on a bag of chips on the seafront to take a breathtaking catch, much to the amusement of Sharpe Junior who was fielding.

The final wicket, perhaps fittingly, went to Kiwi Matt. The newbie got the cherry on for the last over and didn't hang about and took the wicket of Napier who had reached 49. The irony of it all of course is that the Town Matt hails from back home in the Land of the Long White Cloud is....yip you beat me too it!

The visitors squeezed out their 40 overs and ended on 100.

With tea done and dusted, Shifty and Brian took to the crease. The rest is, as they say, history - a 101 unbeaten partnership inside 21 overs, with Fraser reaching 46 and Shifty missing out on a half-century by a single run!

Good to get back to winning ways for the 3s.

Bowling:

Sharpe: 3 for 10
Ray: 3 for 21
Ellis: 0 for 19
McGill: 0 for 32
Geddes: 1 for 13
Kennerley: 1 for 3
