In Ziggy's absence the President stood in and strategically lost the toss. Carlton confidently chose to bat on a handsome Peffermill strip which played well throughout. Their confidence was well placed as an opening partnership of 83 in about 15 overs methodically picked off any loose balls. Zeeshan battled manfully with a pulled hamstring and kept a solid off-stump line, just as the captain had commanded. There followed an exemplary display of disciplined, accurate (boring) bowling by Gerry and Admin which pulled the game right round. We strangled the runs very effectively and the pressure brought wickets. Smudger produced more of the same towards the end and a total of 220-6 seemed quite gettable in the excellent conditions.
It wasn't. An encouraging start by PVB and Nipun flattered to deceive as the middle order sank without trace. As Brian Fraser eloquently put it "116 on that is just piss". Credit to Carlton for a strong performance, Spry making a diligent 104no and some impressive bowling from the younger players. We gave a good account of ourselves in the field but were much too fragile with the bat.

a 2nd team report that's coherent...whatever next
ReplyDelete..and the tea provided by Akeel was fantastic with a wonderful array of spicy morsels and cakes - also the mutual respect shown by the two teams towards each other is a feature of Div 5.
ReplyDeleteYes, sorry about that. I was severely hampered by being sober at the time of writing.
