Jimmy leads Cross to Opening Night Win

ESCA six-a-sides Day 1 (Feb 7th)

PVB reports on the 1st set of indoor fixtures
(KF may follow up with a more detailed report on HX's game..)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Marchmont (14pts) beat Morton (3 pts) by 42 runs : Marchmont 117-3 in 10 overs: Morton 75 all out in 6.3 overs.

Holy Cross (14 pts) beat Drummond Trinity (2 pts) by 4 wkts: Drummond T 86 all out in 6.5 overs : Holy Cross 87-1 in 8.5 overs.

Morton (14 pts) beat Drummond Trinity (3 pts) by 91 runs : Morton 131 all out in 9.2 overs: Drummond T 40 all out in 3.2 overs.

A very enjoyable first night saw one win each for reigning champions Marchmont, Holy Cross and Morton. Morton were well up with scoring rate after 5 overs (55-2) chasing Marchmont’s 117 but then two wickets in an over from Neil Grainger changed everything. As usual Marchmont showed their skill in running between the wickets, scoring 25 threes.

Holy Cross batted carefully in chasing Drummond’s 86. Helped by extras (31) they took no chances with running and scored more singles (20) than the previous 3 innings combined (2, 3 & 3)

Arvind made the top score of the night with four sixes in his 48 for Morton (131 against Drummond); four of their batsmen were run out.

Although Drummond hit 3 sixes in the first two overs, they lost 3 wickets in Bala’s only over.

Thanks to Sandy Scotland, Robin Pollok and Mike Blackshaw for their excellent umpiring – likewise thanks to Peter Kingsbury for his brilliant scoring. Both require some skill in keeping up with the various unusual happenings. Thanks too to all four teams for playing the game in excellent spirit and having a good laugh when odd things happened.
