Another record falls as Cross blow Irvine away in Scottish Cup.

Holy Cross completed a successful and record-breaking weekend with a dominant batting display vs Irvine in the 1st round of the Scottish Cup. Their 331-7 is believed to be a 1st team record. The game was played in very strong wind, which not only caused bails to be dispensed with but also blew away caps, unattended helmets and even boundary markers! Scorers were forced to take shelter in the container. and the scoreboard had to be sheltered behind one of the buttresses of the clubhouse.
Well done to the Irvine guys for putting up with these conditions for 50 overs - we fortunately only needed to stay our there for 30.
Though not easy to bat (it wasn’t easy maintaining your balance at the crease), the bowlers certainly had the more difficult task, especially with the umpires under instruction from CS to be VERY tight on wides - there were 44 (15 as ‘5’ wides) in the HX innings.
Some highlights:
* EC successfully worked out how to set up the fielding circles!
* KF’s supercharged opening assault made full use of the 1st powerplay and (with EC) helped take us to 79-1 off 12, allowing the middle order time to play themselves in.
* CE and Shannon were able to continue the controlled type of partnership they put together vs Grange 2s, with efficient dispatching of the loose deliveries.
* CA continued from were he left off on Saturday with a very fluent 58* including a BIG six over long on.
* Despite limited bowling resources, Cross started particularly well with Roshan and Shannon putting the opposition well behind the required run rate from an early stage.
* Though some part time bowlers were pressed into action they all did a decent job - CA picking up two wickets.
* Cross fielded enthusiastically (top marks to new boy Craig, PVB and Norrie) and supported each other in difficult conditions.
* Surprisingly both captains were able to keep up with the powerplays and other fielding conditions.
* Remind cje that he's on a hatrick next time he bowls (or just if he bowls again in the Scottish Cup??).
* Mandy again did a great job with the teas.
* McGill seemed to injure himself whilst scoring....

* cje's efforts to smuggle some leaf tea into the pot didn't prove too controversial.

Bimbo has been muttering about the lack of match reports....and has now decided that no one else was going to do it:
'At surely a very, very windy Hippo Park [yeah but it was a mere zephyr compared to the wind at Arbo on Sunday] the skipper chose to bowl first. Robin got the short straw and bowled uphill into the wind and completed his 10 overs with customary skill.
On a day where is was almost impossible to bowl with any fluency the standout was Charlie completing his 10 overs for a mere 13 runs and 2 wickets.
Glen's managed to capitalise on some wayward bowling with Farooq in particular finding the boundary with regular aplomb (50 off very few). Glen's OA opener carried his bat for 98* and they put on a very respectable 233.
I think it's safe to say that in the conditions this was a tough total to be looking at, your author had cheekily commented earlier in the day it was about time our batsman won us a game and lo it came to pass.
With a rain interruption KF and Spickers got us off to a good start with quick runs, both falling quite quickly and bringing first CJE and then CA to the crease.
In a display of consummate swordsmanship CJE played his way to an unbeaten 107 and CA 82 not out, both knocks were a pleasure to watch and well worth the late arrival back home.
Club historians have been poring through the record books all weekend and early indications suggest this partnership of 193 could be an all wicket record beating a 174 made in 1978. More details to follow....
Coupled with today's scores it looks like and excellent weekend for Charlie, Calum and the Cross as a whole, 4 wins: Crossgasmic'.

Admin adds - A very good team performance against the table-topping Accies. Some good bowling and remarkably, given some of our earlier efforts, excellent fielding: three run-outs and three good catches. Andy Quinn was to the fore in the field, but perhaps the key moment was Norrie holding on to a rocket from the dangerous Aussie opener. At 72-2 we were cruising but three quick wickets gave Accies a sniff, before some composed and positive batting by the skipper and Nawaz saw us home, with Nawaz finishing the game in style with a pulled four and a line-driven six off successive balls.

* HX won a Twenty:20 match versus a decent side!!-something that happens about as often as Volcanic dust disrupts air flight in the UK.
* HX's catching (and calling for catches) was notably good.
* For once we took the 1st chance offered by their best bat (Zahid Ali).
* Dougie took 3 wickets in 4 balls in his final over.
* Pat was too quick for them.
* Nawaz played for the opposition but only made 5.
* KF and Spick got us off to a flier (44 off 4) that pretty much assured victory-despite a middle order wobble against a fine spell from Umair.
* cje was dismissed by one of the balls of the decade.
* Norrie finished off the game with 2 6's.
But most remarkably:
*HX had 10 players (plus 2 subs -C. McGill and M.Baker) at the ground and ready at 5.50...when the opposition only had 1....

Joy for Vikram as CJE takes desperate measures to ensure McGill's Midweek Men earn first win
In the second midweek friendly of the season McGill's mongrel horde managed to defeat Edinburgh South by circa 40 runs at Arbo.
Batting first Vikram notched his first career 50 with some customarily healthy blows. Despite a not out innings containing several big 6's the highlight of the innings was a spectating CJE being press ganged into open. Without kit he opted to use McGill's box (older than most HX players), his fitness for Saturday is currently under review. Oh, and he got 40 odd. Runs also for Ross and Gary impressed with bat and ball.
In reply Cross shed players throughout the innings finishing with 8 on the pitch and your author making his first and final appearance with the gloves (still better than my batting). Tight bowling meant Edinburgh were always behind the run rate and with McGill taking his 1901, 1902 and 1903 career wickets (2000 by the end of the season?) we won in the twilight.

The Good Old Days??
Today I picked up a copy of The Miller Guide to Scottish Cricket 1994 (at the excellent Christian Aid book sale at St Andrew's and St George's West, George Street-plenty good cricket stuff there btw).
In a review of the 1993 season that makes KF's postings sound Pollyannaish in comparison, James Bradley (club secretary at the time) grumbled as follows:
'Another year of relative mediocrity punctured by rare memorable moments. The 1st team ended the year in its customary 7th position (East League-Div 2), while the 2nds were demoted to Grade C, while the 3rds held their own (Grade C). The slide continues, but at least we've got 2nd and 3rd team derbies to look forward to next year: blood on the pitch may result. Anyway it won't get any better until club members decide that they want to play cricket regularly (a strange thought for a cricket club)' (emphasis added).
Note: according to this same Guide, a certain C. McGill apparently bowled 386.4 overs (!! 100 of them maidens!) in the 1993 season, taking 72 wickets at an ave of 14.8. ...surely 'all games'???

Admin adds: A brisk start against the Largo openers took us to 60-1 after about 12 and briefly sparked dreams of 200+. The introduction of slower change bowlers, notably the evergreen Bob Mowat, brought wickets and slowed the scoring so far that 100+ now looked good. Big hitting from Roshan (two 6s this week) made 150+ look possible before the last two wickets fell in two balls.
Vik and Roshan then bowled tight, accurate opening bursts before Gerry took three wickets in a typically skillful and miserly spell. With the opposition 60-odd for 4 and later 100-odd for 7 20 points looked on, but some sensible and spirited batting from the young tail saw Largo home. Certainly better than last week, especially the catching, but still much room for improvement. PS - nice to see Popey on a flying visit from Leeds.

The Joy of Sixes ?
Our near neighbours, Drummond Trinity, have kindly invited us to take part in their annual Hamish Jardine six-a-side tournament, to be held at Inverleith Park on Sunday 19th June. By all accounts last year's competition was great fun.

We did well to recover from 33-7 but if only we'd made a half decent start...

lost to Mufs 3rds by 10 wickets
Admin adds - Charlie's too kind - we couldn't bat (unlike last week) or catch (just like last week). A depleted 2nds scored far too few as the recognised batsmen were dismissed cheaply and tamely by a decent, but not terribly threatening, Murrayfield-DAFS attack. Debutant Irfan Butt hit a promising 29 and the lower middle order added some useful runs, most notably with Roshan's huge six, but 120 was unlikely to be enough unless we struck early. For the second week running Roshan and Usama opened the bowling very well but without any luck and as Darren Kidd started to get his eye in the run rate accelerated.
The last 30 or so runs came very quickly as the bowlers struggled to grip a sodden ball, but by then the die was cast as catches dropped while the ball was still dry (sorry, Smudge) had cost us dear. Thanks to MUFS for a game played in the usual good spirits and without any of the "overenthusiastic" appealing which is now so widespread.

Suspicions aroused
Cricketers across the world frequently call into question umpires eyesight at almost every unfavourable decision.
As we know HX batsman have such perfect technique that its impossible for anyone to fall victim to a LBW, so it was with great amusement to most of the HX players to spot to the above at hosts Boroughmuir's modern facilities at Meggatland on Saturday.
In other news rumours that the skipper may require a hearing aid on are yet to be confirmed!

Old Contemptibles 169-9 (8) : Holy Cross 170-7.
Lomax and Kumar transformed OC's score with a 7th wkt partnership of 80+ with spectacular striking of the ball. HX's runs were shared between Bates (23), Bailey (35), skipper Webb (47) and Cydzik (35?).
It was great to meet up with our friends from OC who have moved up to div 5 and will be a wonderful addition there. Neither side seemed interested in catching the ball; apart from 2 stumpings from Shifty (HX) and a caught behind for OC, no outfield catches were taken at all.
Both clubs were delighted with the debuts of Kumar (runs & wkts) for OC and Roshan (HX - 9 overs for 13 runs).

Div 8 at Campbell Park.
Kirk Brae 2nd XI about 170 beat Holy Cross 3rd XI by about 40. (no details other than a fine 63 for Matt Cunningham making his debut for HX)...I do hear that McGill's innings may have been a short one...though he did receive a jaffa...

a good pitch helped create a good match.
Some rusty bowling and fielding (especially by us) on display but plenty good batting.
Key partnership was that of 80 for the 7th wicket between Hutchinson and Manam who looked like a VERY good no. 8.
HX were well in it until a very unfortunate run out
broke a promising 8th wicket partnership between EC and Bimbo who looked to be in good form.
